The exploration of this piece began a few years prior when I hiked down into the area of Smith Rock where you get this view along the river. Before that time, when I painted it onsite, it was from above. (Who likes to hike way back UP with painting gear!) But three of us were determined to paint at the bottom during an “iffy” weather day. We were happily rewarded with spectacular light! After a couple of studies and a complete rework of this larger piece that was initially painted a couple of years ago, Shadows in Motion was born.
