I painted this mostly onsite at Black Butte Ranch (just north of Bend) when the American Impressionist National Show was here in Bend. It was in early September, 2026, when the weather is normally sunny and still fairly warm. But just during the week of the AIS events, the weather decided to pull a fast one on us and become cold, windy, blustery and rainy...not at all typical Bend weather, which is always disappointing when you have folks visiting, especially those visiting for the first time. But the upside was that, while all this "weather" was happening, the mountains got their first dusting of snow for the season. And it was also a great opportunity to brush up (no pun intended) on painting dramatic clouds from life! After that week, the temperatures rose back into the upper 70s and mid 80s for another month or more, and the snow melted off the mountains (always sad). But I enjoyed painting the dramatic weather in this one, and in another 8x10 companion piece to this one ("Cloud Cover"...also on this website and available at Mockingbird Gallery) which was also painted onsite on the same day.  I'm looking forward to when the snow starts sticking to the mountains for the winter!

This piece will be arriving at Mockingbird Gallery, Bend, OR, in late October 2026.
