2024 workshop at Sweetwater Center for the Arts, Sewickley, PA
SCROLL DOWN FOR WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
My workshops are held throughout the year in numerous locations in the United States. I teach landscape painting in pastel or oil, or both. Although I'm an avid plein air painter myself, and I encourage students to paint outdoors as much as they can, I'm primarily a studio instructor. All of the workshops described on this page and listed below in my schedule are studio workshops unless "plein air" is indicated.
Following are the various workshops I currently offer:
"Painting The Poetic Landscape" is my basic workshop I often teach when I'm new to a particular teaching venue. This workshop is a broad overview of my approach to painting and covers value, color temperature, chroma, composition, editing, and mark making. This is typically the only workshop in which I cover mark marking with specific exercises for students to complete...many artists who have heard of my workshops know them as "count the stroke" exercises...very fun/very challenging!
"Landscape & Light" covers some of what I teach in my basic workshop but is a more detailed study of color temperature. We examine various lighting conditions in the landscape and how to capture each in a painting. For multiday workshops, I often focus on a different lighting condition for each day.
“Composing the Poetic Landscape” is an updated version of my previously taught "Composition Boot Camp" workshop. The emphasis is on shapes and editing. And the goal is to create the illusion of subject matter details in your landscape painting without laboring over unnecessary rendering, resulting in a more expressive and eloquent capture of your subject. We address the thumbnail planning stage and then work up to final paintings that maintain the initial shapes and editing, while learning to make selective decisions for the finishing stages.
"Painting Expressive Winter Landscapes" is an updated version of my previously taught "The Light-Filled Snow Scene" workshop. Besides learning to paint luminous snow scenes, we’ll also address the beautiful color palette and light effects we can find in the winter season, and the possibilities that winter vegetation provides us for creating magical edge contrast and ultimately a more expressive winter landscape painting.
"Painting Lyrical Water" takes an in-depth look at creating expressive water with brilliant reflective light and dynamic movement. Subject matter is primarily moving water such as rivers/streams/creeks, waterfalls, and ocean waves. We’ll also cover some of the general landscape painting skills that are taught in my basic workshop.
"Inspiration Renewal for the Landscape Painter" takes a slower pace than my other workshops and focuses on finding inspiration for your paintings. We'll still address some key painting skills in the studio, but we'll also head outdoors to gather visual ideas from life with small, quick sketches. Although not entirely medium specific, artists working in oil or pastel will benefit most, but those working in acrylic and gouache are also welcome. This isn't a plein air workshop in which you'll need a complete plein air setup. Besides your studio supplies, a sketchbook and a very small, portable kit of your favorite medium that can work in your lap while sitting on the ground or on a small stool will be all that’s needed.
"Miles & Mountains" takes a deep dive into creating atmospheric depth for expansive landscapes and the illusion of enormous size for mountains. Many other key landscape painting skills will also be covered, but primarily as they pertain to vast landscape views and mountains.
All my workshops begin each day with a demonstration followed by plenty of individual help at the easel. Most students who attend my workshops have some painting experience, but all levels are welcome. See workshop schedule below.

PASTEL & BRUSH SETS
Besides the materials specified on my workshop supply lists, students (or any artists) may also be interested in a pastel set or brush set that I've hand selected.
Winter Landscape Pastel Set
I've chosen from the line of hand-rolled pastels made by Jack Richeson an assortment of colors that I use in many of my snow scenes and surrounding winter landscapes. It includes a wide range of color temperature that works well for capturing light especially in snow scenes, but is also ideal for many light-filled landscapes. The set also includes greyed colors that I find workshop students are often missing. The set is available through Dakota Pastels or Judson's Art Outfitter.

Oil Painting Brush Set
I've put together a set of Richeson's line of Grey Matters Bristle Brushes that are ideal for painting the subject matter I cover in my workshops. The set includes 6 brushes: sizes 1, 2 & 3 (filberts) and 4, 6 & 8 (flats), and is available through Judson's Art Outfitters. (This set has been revised from my previous Richeson set of "Signature Bristle Brushes." The Signature brushes have been discontinued, but some are still available individually through Judson's.)
